Mindy Kaling will be publishing my book!!!

Hi Reader,

I have some amazing news! Project Husband will now be published by actor/writer/producer/director Mindy Kaling's Amazon imprint, Mindy's Book Studio!

As I mentioned in my previous email, I accepted an offer from Emily Freidenrich at Lake Union Publishing, which is also an Amazon imprint. I don't know all the details, but it seems Emily thought my book would be a good fit for Mindy and sent it over to her. And Mindy loved it!

It's been a week since I heard the news and I still can't believe it!

Mindy's Book Studio focuses on diverse stories by new and emerging authors, especially women of color, and I'm so honored to join this amazing group. Because of this move, the release date for Project Husband is now set for February 2028.

The contract is now signed and complete! Up next are developmental edits with Emily.

Stay tuned for more updates, and as always, thank you so much for being part of my journey!

Take care,

Delise

Life Update

  • Last month was busy with my daughter's birthday. Here in Germany, children usually get two birthday parties: one with family and one with friends. The kid's party is without parents, so you basically have to take care of 5-7 kids on your own. This year, my daughter wanted to cook something together with her friends, so my husband had to prepare dough so they could do their own gnocchis. They decorated their own aprons before getting their hands dirty, and after lunch, we drove to the movie theater to watch Coyote vs. Acme, which was really funny (highly recommended!). When we returned, they decorated their own cupcakes, which was actually a really good activity that kept them busy for at least an hour. The girls had a lot of fun, and I'm happy they enjoyed it, but it was also so stressful!!
  • This month, we've been focusing on finding a school for my daughter to attend next year. Here in Germany, elementary schools run until the fourth grade. Then the kids move on to the next school, where they can stay until they graduate (here it's until the thirteenth grade). So we've been researching schools, going to information evenings and open houses. This will keep us busy until next month, and then registration will happen early next year. Wish us luck!

Recommendations

  • Swan Song: Diana, My Sister by Charles Spencer - I was twenty when Princess Diana died, and I still remember when I learned of her death, the shock of it. I listened to this book on audio and really enjoyed listening to Charles Spencer narrate his own story. He structures the book according to his eulogy: the book moves between planning Diana's funeral and his relationship with Diana, giving more context to the eulogy. I really enjoyed the behind-the-scenes look at the funeral preparations and was moved at times by the story. Diana really comes to life on the pages: her unique sensibilities, her humor, and her flaws. A must-read for Diana fans!
  • Felicity - I saw on Instagram that this show will now be available on Netflix. I was still in college when this show aired, and it has influenced me so much, it even inspired a scene in Project Husband. If you've never seen it, it's about a young girl, Felicity, who decides to change plans and go to college in NYC to follow the guy she always had a crush on but never got the nerve to talk to. This is a show about taking risks and following your heart, even when it goes against everyone else's expectations.
  • Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story - I also saw on IG that there will be a new Bridgerton Story dedicated to Violet. While we wait, I definitely recommend watching Queen Charlotte, if you haven't. It's my favorite of the Bridgerton series, full of depth and more mature themes, like falling (and staying) in love with someone who has mental health issues. That ending made me cry!
  • The Devil Wears Prada 2 - I recently watched this with my daughter, and I found it so good! I loved how they addressed how times have changed in twenty years, not only because of technology but also how we as a society don't tolerate mean bosses like Miranda. The acting was on point, and it was great seeing the characters again.

“A simply riveting, fun and funny read from first page to last, ONE TOUGH COOKIE is all the more impressive when considering that it is author Delise Torres’ debut as a novelist.”

Hi Reader, I recently took part in a character arc workshop, where I was able to evaluate a character arc worksheet and give feedback to the writer. It reminded me on a common challenge many writers face, myself included: how to tie the plot to the arc of change. We may know what our character's misbelief is and why they need to change, but how do we actually show that change as it's happening? It's not enough to tell the reader that the character has changed, they have to witness it....

Hi Reader, In my experience critiquing manuscripts, I see many writers failing to set up their stories properly. A novel's opening pages need to do a lot of heaving lifting: introduce the characters, the setting, and the plot without overwhelming the reader with too much information. Knowing what to reveal and what to withhold is a challenge that many writers face. So in this issue, I want to discuss the most important information you need to reveal in your opening pages. Who is your...

Hi Reader, I'm so excited to announce that my second book, Project Husband, will be published by Lake Union, with a tentative realease date of December 2027! Technically, it's not official yet.
