Hi
I wish I could report that I finished my novel, PROJECT HUSBAND, but I didn't make much progress last month. With Easter holidays and my scientific outlines taking longer than anticipated, I still have a lot of work to do. Keep your fingers crossed that I finish this month! Take care,
Writing Update
If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen screenshots of the scientific journals I spent the month of April reading, learning as much as I can about fertility testing and IVF, which are important topics in my book. I needed this information to complete one of the outlines in my novel, this one for Project Baby, which took me all month to complete. It's frustrating to be so detail oriented, but I can't help it! When I set out to do something, I do it well, even if it takes me forever. I hope readers will find it fun and interesting.
Life Update
- In Germany, Easter is a big deal. Schools take a two-week break, and Good Friday and the Monday after Easter are holidays. I don't mind celebrating, but I find all these holidays disruptive to my writing time (I'm a workaholic, I know, haha). If you want to know more about life in Germany, you can check out my blog posts about Easter Traditions and Holidays.
- I turned 48 last week! My birthday wishes were simple: a spa foot massager and going out for sushi, and my wonderful husband delivered! My 7-year-old daughter tried sushi for the first time, and though she wasn't a fan, she still enjoyed some salmon and edamame.
Recommendations
This month, I'm recommending two shows and two documentaries, all available on Netflix, all dealing with darker themes than my usual recommendations, so if that's not your thing, feel free to skip. I'm a huge fan of horror and true crime and though that doesn't fit with my "brand," I'd like to share that side of me with you as well.
- Baby Reindeer - This show is based on the true-life experiences of a male comedian with a female stalker. I thought it would be more true crime-y, but it is so much more! Beautifully acted, emotionally wrenching, this is a story about trauma, mental illness, and loneliness. Trigger Warnings: sexual abuse and stalking.
- Adolescence - As a parent, this show depressed the hell out of me. The story centers on a murder and its ramifications, touching on how teenagers today can become radicalized at a young age through social media, with adults having no idea it's happening. The acting is superb and each episode was filmed in real time using only one continuous shot.
- American Murder: Gabby Petito - I followed this case as it occured back in 2021. Gabby was a 22-year-old influencer who went missing during a vanlife trip across the US with her fiancee. Her story went viral, igniting discussions about domestic violence and controlling relationships. The documentary shares unedited footage that Gabby filmed as well as the perspective of her friends and family.
- Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing - I was not familiar with Piper Rockelle, the subject of this documentary, and after learning about her and how kids these days (especially girls) are exposed to child predators through social media without their knowledge, I was left sad, angry, and disgusted. If you have kids, especially daughters, I encourage you to watch.
Currently Watching - Andor on Disney + and the second season of Squid Game on Netflix. Currently Reading - Slanting Toward the Sea, a literary coming-of-age debut novel written by my dear friend, Lidija Hilje. Coming July 8.
“A simply riveting, fun and funny read from first page to last, ONE TOUGH COOKIE is all the more impressive when considering that it is author Delise Torres’ debut as a novelist.”
